Beginning Band: The beginning band program is open to all students in grades 4-8 and is designed to introduce the students of Providence Creek Academy to the 6 different instrumental groups we offer at PCA. Students have the opportunity to choose flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, or percussion. This program is based on a weekly lesson which meets on a rotating basis and differs depending on the instrument. This program is a great opportunity for all students looking to further their musical education and understanding of the language of music. The students use the Essential Elements 2000 series and play a winter and spring concert as a band. Intermediate Band: The intermediate band is for those who started in fourth grade the previous year and are continuing on the same instrument in fifth grade. The students in this band are not beginners anymore, but are not quite ready to play more advanced literature. This transitional group is designed to hone the skills of each student so that they will be better prepared for when they move on to the concert band the following year. The students continue working out of the Essential Elements 2000 series, and play arrangements done by Mr. Howell for the winter and spring concerts. Mr. Howell writes arrangement for the band so that they have an opportunity to play actual yet simple band pieces instead of just duets. This better prepares them for the following year when they will be playing concert band repertoire. | Concert Band: The concert band at Providence Creek Academy is open to all 6-8 grade students who have either played for a year or more at PCA, or at another school. The band meets twice a week in addition to weekly lessons for each instrumental group. This band performs repertoire generally selected from the Young Band series. Past repertoire has included “Pirates of the Caribbean”, “Africata”, “Evil Ways”, “Carols in Concert”, and “Carol of the Bells.” Select Ensemble: Select Ensemble is a group which was created towards the end of the 2008-2009 school year. This ensemble is smaller with 16 members this year, and plays harder music. The members of this ensemble, with the exception of two students, are made up of seventh and eighth graders. Students in this ensemble are hand selected by Mr. Howell, having met high levels of musical excellence on their instruments. Members of the Select Ensemble rehearse 2 days a week, then rehearse another 2 days a week with the Concert Band. Many of the students in this ensemble are also in Choir and/or Percussion Ensemble. Past repertoire for this ensemble has included “All the Pretty Little Horses”, “Fantasia on the Dargason”, and “Christmas Time with Charlie Brown.” |
